Caring for Yourself So You Can Keep Caring for Your Family

There are seasons of motherhood when even the everyday things can begin to feel overwhelming. Another meal to prepare. Another lesson to teach. Another load of laundry waiting to be folded. You love your family. You want to serve them well. But somewhere along the way, you have become tired enough that everything feels harder than it used to.
I have been there. As a homeschooling mother of eight, I know there are times when our
families need more from us than we expected to give. A sick child needs comfort in the
middle of the night. A difficult day requires patience we were not prepared to exercise. Our plans change because someone we love needs us. Those sacrifices matter. Yet we also need wisdom about how we care for the woman doing the serving.

Notice what needs tending

When I feel overwhelmed, my first instinct can be to tell myself to try harder. Sometimes I
do need more discipline. But sometimes I need to pause and ask a few honest questions.
Have I been spending time with the Lord? Have I been staying up later than I should? Is there something weighing on my heart that I need to talk through with my husband? Have I filled our schedule beyond what our family can reasonably carry? These questions help us recognize what needs attention. We can bring our weariness before the Lord honestly, without pretending that everything is fine.

Stay close to the source of your strength

Jesus says in John 15:5:

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same
bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

In this passage, Jesus teaches His disciples to abide in Him. That dependence belongs in our everyday lives, including the way we care for our homes and families.
When the day fills quickly, time in the Word can be the first thing pushed aside. We answer everyone else’s needs and reach bedtime without having stopped to seek the Lord
ourselves.

Make room to open your Bible and pray. The moment may be interrupted. It may happen
with a child beside you. Still, you can turn your attention to Him and ask for wisdom,
patience, and strength for the responsibilities ahead.

Make room for refreshment

In the video, my husband takes the children out, and I spend a quiet stretch of time
decorating our home for fall. For me, moving things around and making our surroundings
beautiful is refreshing. Your refreshing moments may look different. Perhaps you enjoy a walk, reading, gardening, or a quiet cup of coffee. You may simply need time to sit, pray, and think without answering
another question.

Ask yourself what actually leaves you refreshed, then talk with your husband about making room for it. Be specific about the help you need. A small, regular pause can beautifully become a part of your family’s routine.

There will still be demanding days. Rest will not make every responsibility easy or leave us
motivated every morning. But caring wisely for ourselves helps us return to those
responsibilities with greater attentiveness and willingness. This coming week, choose one thing that needs tending. Protect a moment in the Word. Ask for help with a task. Make room for a quiet pause.

You are part of the household you are caring for. Let that truth shape how you walk through this season.
