Cold winter days have past and spring has arrived. Time for decluttering, organizing, refreshing and redecorating! In this blog post, we’ll explore five simple ways to refresh your entryway.
Before we dive in, let’s dwell on the significance of your entryway. Your entryway sets the tone for your entire home and often reflects your personality and style. It’s that place where visitors and friends are first greeted and can help them feel welcome. A well thought out entryway helps in keeping everyone in your family organized, creating functionality by providing storage solutions for keys, shoes, and other essentials. This makes it both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Finally, it can also make a bold statement about who you are and what you value as a family.
1. Out With The Old, In With The New
The journey to reviving your entryway begins with decluttering and getting rid of things that may be weighing down your space to make room for the new. To everything there is a season, can I get an Amen! Now this doesn’t mean that you have to get rid of everything, but if you are like me sometimes we can end up holding on to items that can benefit someone else, or that need to be put away for another season. Consider making a goodwill basket, having a garage sale or recycling items in your entryway, or foyer that are unnecessary.
Declutter your closets by putting away winter gear, such as coats, gloves, scarves, boots etc. If you have an entryway table, go through it and rid it of any unnecessary items. If you are short on storage, use baskets to help make better use of the space. Some off season things can remain in the space, but can easily be tucked away in a decorative basket, alleviating the clutter.
2. Deep Clean and Touch Up
Once you’ve decluttered your space, the next step is to deep clean your space. Dust, wipe down walls, baseboard surfaces, vacuum, clean rugs, grout, etc. It’s time to make everything shine! If you’re like me and have a large family, then make it a family affair, and assign duties to family members. There’s something special about working together as a family. Put on some music, sing some hymns and get down! Remember, many hands make work light.
This is also a good time to touch up things like peeling paint, tighten loose fixtures, change out old lightbulbs, make any small repairs, etc.
3. Add or Refinish A Piece of Furniture
Have a piece of wood furniture that is starting to look outdated? Rather than getting rid of it, why not revive it with a new coat of paint or sand it down all together and refinish it with a new stain color. Refinishing and repurposing furniture is one of my favorite things to do. I love giving items that seem old and worn new life. It reminds me of what our Heavenly Father does with us. At times we feel so worn and spent. We feel as if our lives serve no purpose and that we are good for nothing. God, however, has a way of proving us wrong. He can take the most broken life and make something new and beautiful out of it. We just have to be willing to let him.
In my foyer, I refinished an entryway table that I had purchased online. It was the perfect size, but not the perfect color. Lord willing, I’ll post a blog on how I refinished the table some time in the future.
4. Decorate to Your Hearts Desire
Now for the fun part! After cleaning and decluttering you should now have a blank slate to begin adding some decorative items. If you have a console or entryway table in your foyer, then this is the perfect place to create a focal point. Mirrors reflect light, so they are a perfect addition above the entryway table for brightening and opening up the space in your foyer. In addition to being decorative, mirrors are also purposeful. I know everyone in my family would agree as they are perfect for that last glance everyone needs before leaving home, to make sure everything is in the right place.
Adding some florals or greenery is also the perfect addition to any entryway. I find that bringing a little something from outside the home to the inside of the home, helps us to reflect more on the wonderful seasons that God has created. Some floral ideas for spring are blossoms, ferns, tulips, etc. Plants help rejuvenate your space, bringing life to the scene.
5. Add the Living Word
Speaking of life, what better way to top things off than to add the living word. In our home, the word of God is at the center. Our purpose and the way that we live revolves around the Word of God. Thus, at the focal point of our entryway, I like to incorporate His words. Psalm 23, is a passage of scripture that resonates deeply with me. It’s a passage I remember learning as a young girl and has always remained in my heart.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever”
Spring is a time of restoration and of new beginnings. I’m decorating my foyer this spring with this passage of scripture. It’s the perfect reminder as I serve in the home of God’s protection and provision for our family. We will be reminded each day of God’s leading in our lives and of his restorative power. I’ve added this print of a shepherd leading his flock of sheep. It’s my husband’s favorite. I think it pairs perfectly with the Psalm 23 print.
